The difference? Role-setting, context-setting, and clear outcomes.
To get the best results from ChatGPT and other AI tools, always include:
- The Role: Tell the AI who it is acting as. (“You are my product expert”)
- The Task: Be clear and specific. (“Create a 5‑step checklist for servicing a compact tractor”)
- The Tone or Style: Informal, expert, persuasive, customer‑friendly, etc.
- The Format: Bullet points, a paragraph, a numbered list, social post, email, etc.
- The Audience: Dealer principal, customer, staff member, manufacturer, etc.
- Prompt Like a Pro: What to Say and When
- Multi‑Turn Prompting: Have a Conversation
In 2026, the best results come from iterating your prompt. Here’s how:
- Start with a clear prompt
- Evaluate the response: Does it make sense? Too long? Too short? Off‑brand?
- Continue the thread:
- “That’s good — now make it shorter.”
- “Add a call‑to‑action at the end.”
- “Now rewrite it for someone new to our business.”
- Think of it like giving feedback to a junior member of staff. You don’t need to start over — you refine as you go.
Prompting Power Moves for Dealers
“Always remember…” Ask AI to stay consistent:
Use this to train your AI to remember things across prompts: “Always remember we’re a family‑run dealership in North Yorkshire, specialising in professional ground care equipment.”
“Challenge me…” Ask AI to disagree or raise concerns:
- “Challenge my plan to run a price promotion this summer. What are the risks I haven’t considered?”
- “Help me explain this to…”
- Great for team training or customer education:
- “Explain the benefits of ethanol‑free fuel to a customer who’s not technically minded.”
Prompting Checklist
- Set the role
- Define the task clearly
- State the audience and tone
- Ask for specific output formats
- Follow up and refine
- Store useful prompts in a folder or GPT Project
- Train the AI on your business context with “Always remember…”
Summary
Prompting is a skill. The better your prompts, the better your results. Just like learning how to brief a good member of staff, effective prompting comes with practice. By treating AI like a real assistant — with clear instructions and feedback — you’ll unlock more value, faster.
